About Operations Research
Operations Research - OR (also called Management Science) is the study of scientific approaches to decision-making. It is concerned with assisting and advising decision-makers in a wide variety of business and industrial settings. OR has many applications in science, engineering, economics, and industry and thus the ability to solve OR problems is crucial for both researchers and engineers. On a job market, it is the essential tool in a business analysist role and the business consultant role. Being able to solve the real-life problems and obtaining the right solution requires understanding and modeling the problem mathematically and applying appropriate optimization tools and skills to solve the mathematical model. Through mathematical modeling, OR seeks to design, improve and optimize complex systems. The mathematical tools used for the solution of such models are either deterministic or stochastic, depending on the nature of the real modeled system. Most of the optimization problems consist of an economic objective which we want to maximize under scarce resources.

The Operations Research class introduces students to fundamental modeling and solution methods used today for complex decision-making problems in deterministic operations research. The OR class consists of seven four-hour modules intended to introduce students to use quantitative methods and techniques to provide structured and analytical approaches to complex decision-making applicable to almost every business setting, such as, e.g., manufacturing, supply chain management, banking, distribution and logistics, private and public services, hospitals, and defense. Students will develop some quantitative problem modeling and solving skills and learn how to make intelligent business decisions from the optimization point of view. An emphasis will be given to mathematical model formulation and basic solution methodologies. We will learn basic deterministic models and solution methods for linear programming together with transportation and assignment problem, and network flows. Moreover, we will introduce an advanced software tool for optimization, ILOG-CPLEX, for large-scale linear optimization that will be used to solve representative business and industrial problems.

To be successful in this class, you need to have a knowledge of basic programming techniques and a working knowledge of calculus and linear algebra.

Class attendance and expected workload
On-time attendance to the class is mandatory. Sign-in sheets are distributed during the class to verify your attendance.
You will receive attendance bonus points if your attendance exceeds 90% over the whole semester and you will receive attendance malus points if your attendance is below 80% over the whole semester. Your grade will be unaffected if your attendance is between 80% and 90%.
On average students need to spend 2 hours of study and preparation for each 60-minute lecture/tutorial.
